Hi, I’m Eddie McGee and as you can see, this is my RC helicopter site. Since being a kid I always wanted to fly model helicopters & remember one Christmas receiving a helicopter on a boom called VertiBird Air Police….. I was hooked! Ever since then I dreamed of owning a proper Radio Controlled Helicopter, no wires, no attachments to a metal arm, just a real flying helicopter. Have a look at the original advertisement from 1974 by clicking on the picture below, I loved this thing.
It took another 25 years when my wife bought me a second hand Concept30 for my 30th Birthday to actually ‘fly’ one of these things, flying being a broad term. For weeks on end I’d go to a local industrial estate and learn to ‘hover’ on the floor, there I was, with my training undercarriage with plastic balls on the end skating around the floor. I was determined to master it and then… I could get it to stay in one place at the point of lifting off (I’m not actually off the floor at this stage), I was so happy just to get to this stage. Back in the day we didn’t have heading lock gyro’s and it was quite a feat to have the heli facing the correct way and keeping it in one place.
I finally built up the nerve and slowly added collective, it lifted off and I actually held it in that place for around 2 minutes, concentration was focused so much and my knees were shaking. I finally brought it back to ground with a little bounce and a bump (Ah, that’s what ground effect is!), I’d never felt so happy with a hobby before. That’s how I became addicted to RC heli’s.
I had a big break from flying the helis due to family and motorbikes!, but returned after a serious motorbike accident. I’ve been flying heli’s on and off now for 15 years and love the sport but hate the dependence on the good old British weather.
I hope you enjoy looking at my videos, photos and comments and will hopefully have time to keep updating the site with new and old projects, you can contact me through my Facebook page linked at the bottom of this page.
